Mechanical Transmissions

Considering that a company is seeking to Reduce Costs by unifying lines and families of lubricants and, taking into account that a GL-5 transmission oil is apparently superior in terms of Classification to a GL-4 and, considering that both have the same SAE viscosity, by way of example, a GL-4 SAE 90 and a GL-5 SAE 90, we could without fear substitute the GL-4 for the GL-5 in any condition and type of application, unifying and thus reducing an item in our stock?

  • The first point to be considered in such an issue is the FUNDAMENTAL RULE: Who determines the classification and type of lubricant to be used in any equipment is always the Manufacturer of the same, and this type of information is always included in the manuals that accompany the equipment and vehicles. . However, technically speaking, even though a GL-5 transmission oil is of a higher rating than a GL-4, it is not a sufficient factor to replace a GL-4 with a GL-5, as the simple matter of having the same viscosity and a GL-5 being a higher rating than a GL-4 does not guarantee that it can be safely applied to equipment that has been designed to work with a GL-4 rated lubricant, this is because the formulations of the additive packages used in a GL-5 are not the same as a GL-4.
  • Another point that explains is that the lubricants, even with the same viscosity and being of the same application family, in the example, Transmission Systems, mechanics, in general there are subtle but important differences, both in technology and in the design of these equipment that make them different and, due to these differences, they were designed to be used with different lubricants, even though they are from the same family, as is the case with GL-4 and GL-5. A GL-5 is a lubricant for much more severe applications than a GL-4 and, the indiscriminate substitution of a GL-4 for a Gl-5, can damage during the use with GL-5, thus reducing the useful life equipment in the medium to long term. Therefore, the FUNDAMENTAL RULE must always be considered: WHO DETERMINES THE CLASSIFICATION AND TYPE OF LUBRICANT TO BE USED IN ANY EQUIPMENT IS ALWAYS THE MANUFACTURER AND THIS TYPE OF INFORMATION ALWAYS COMES IN THE MANUALS THAT ACCOMPANY THE EQUIPMENT AND VEHICLES!
